Marie Furlong had been working as a freelance IT consultant to corporations and large companies for more than 25 years. However, in April 2010 she had a minor accident that left her unable to work and it wasn’t until the end of 2010 that Marie was ready to return to employment. “Sadly it wasn’t to be, recession had taken hold and opportunities were less prolific. I wasn’t able to break back into my own market and many of my network contacts had been made redundant or retired early. Truly a test of my own resilience.”

Aged over 50, Marie signed on at the Jobcentre in March 2011. “Having been advised through Jobcentre Plus of the Outset Bristol courses I followed up what was available and though at the time I didn’t know what exactly I could go into business with, I knew my skill set was highly transferable.”

Marie joined Outset Bristol’s programme of business start-up workshops in August 2011, receiving more than 50 hours of workshop advice and one-to-one support to help her start her business. “The courses gave me a good up-to-date view on what was needed for going into business in the current environment. The main hurdles were identifying what would be my best use of skills and what business I would create with them. I am very happy I have found my business niche and vision.

“The Outset courses cover all the principles of getting to start a business and I found it all very helpful. They offered a good overview of what is actually needed to start a new business from just an inkling or idea.”

Marie registered her new business, Active Resilience, in April 2012. By this time Marie was officially ‘long-term’ unemployed and was able to apply for the New Enterprise Allowance through her Jobcentre Plus, which also gave her access to a start-up loan through the scheme.

Marie was inspired to start Active Resilience by Wagnild and Young’s research work on resilience undertaken in the 1990s. “The original research about resilient people complements my background in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) to be able to enhance people’s resilience for life. I was inspired to develop my own training and coaching specialising in personal and business resilience supported by NLP. Rather than be ‘yet another NLP life coach’,” says Marie.

“Resilience training and coaching is a relatively new focus in the business and personal development world. Resilience is the ability to bounce back up from life’s adversities. Active Resilience is dedicated to enhancing the resilience of anyone who doesn’t want to wait for life’s lessons and would like the ‘edge’ now.”

Active Resilience is linked to the Resilience Centre in the USA. As well as offering individual coaching sessions, Marie’s first personal Resilience Development course takes place in central Bristol on alternative Saturdays 16th, 30th June and 14th July 2012. Marie is also running a ten-day Resilience and NLP training course from Sept 2012 – Jan 2013, one weekend a month.

Marie’s vision for her business is to also provide resilience training to corporates, develop more resilience and NLP courses and, hopefully, “to have so much success Active Resilience may have associate trainers or licensed trainers for the programmes that will be developed.”
